I enjoy a good hero story, and everyone loves the allure of the forbidden. So when I heard of Hero, a bar and restaurant designed to honor our heroes (real and fantasy) with a hidden speakeasy theme, I was intrigued! I checked it out with a fairly large group on a Friday night, with reservations to ensure we got the best table in the house.

As their website points out, Hero’s decor is meant to evoke a speakeasy during the height of the Prohibition era, with the notable addition of graffiti art and superhero action figures posed throughout the room. What the website does not highlight is the spectacular view, as this open-air restaurant is located on the 9th floor of the Trademark Hotel at Village Market. The air was filled with music that was loud enough to enjoy without being loud enough to distract, as conversation and laughter abounded. The combination of these elements results in an ambiance that is both sophisticated and fun.

The menu, inspired by both heroes and villains, is presented in the form of a comic book. The drinks–including Loki’s Cup, Peter Porker, and Joker Juice–include a smorgasbord of selections made with rum, whisky, gin, and vodka. The Heroes drinks are especially unique, as they come with a show of swirling smoke that adds a distinctive flavor. Sidekicks are more normal in appearance, but just as good in taste. For those who prefer less or no alcohol, there are Parole and Law Enforcement options as well. The dinner menu is less hero-themed,  but is definitely Asian-inspired with a healthy selection of sushi rolls and other small plates. The dessert menu, which includes such selections as I Am Kane and Nose Punch, consists of unique sorbet and ice cream flavors. Among the group of us, we tried more drinks than I care to admit, several appetizers and mains, and a few desserts. Everything was delicious, although the desserts didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by the rest of the fare.

The service was a bit mixed. On the one hand, the servers were friendly and fun, giving superhero names rather than confessing their secret identities–one of our servers was Catwoman. On the other hand, our large group seemed a little overwhelming, as several ordered items were forgotten. Once the oversights were brought to their attention, the staff quickly corrected the situation, ensuring that we all left happy at the end of the night.

Overall, I highly recommend Hero as a fun night out. Be advised that their website states that it’s an adult-only venue, with no one under 18 allowed (although a regular customer said that kids are allowed until 6pm; you may want to call before showing up with your kids for lunch). Closed on Mondays, it’s open every other day from noon until 11pm. Reservations are probably a good idea and can be made through their website.
